Bold Red Dining Room Interior Design in El Dorado Hills Featuring Chelsea Textiles
A complete dining room interior design requires careful attention to detail from your designer. There are so many moving parts and decisions to be made, yet with the right designer, the result can leave you breathless with excitement at your newly transformed space.
Keely Hersh, owner and designer of Right at Home Interiors in El Dorado Hills, California, worked with her client, Gina, to design a beautiful series of spaces throughout her home, including this bold red dining room. The process was fun and smooth, resulting in gorgeous home interiors Gina loved. Let’s see how this red dining room design came together.
Dining Room Interior Design Process

In the before picture above, Keely’s installer Bill Mott can be seen installing the beautiful rod from Design Elements that were chosen for her new drapes to hang on in Gina’s dining room.
A Gorgeous Transformation

Here in the after photo in Gina’s El Dorado Hills, CA home you can see the dramatic paprika red wall color which contrasts stunningly against the cream-colored drapery. Gina fell in love with this Chelsea Textiles fabric (Indo-chine 2047/01) for her dining room’s custom window treatments. It is a very special fabric that was entirely hand-embroidered in India. The custom handwork makes it more expensive by the yard, but Keely was able to make two valances and two accent pillows with only three yards of fabric. The ability to create multiple pieces with a small amount of fabric is a skill of Keely’s that allows clients to choose receive great value from more expensive fabrics.
The hand-embroidered fabric is paired with Ground Cream 2000/02 for the drapes. The leading edges of the draperies are accented with Trend Fabric’s 03317/Poppy trim banding, which Keely purchased from Designer’s Only in Sacramento. The walls and ceiling are painted with a high gloss sheen, which is such a fun way to highlight Gina’s blue and white china collection.
Accent Chair Pillows in Progress

Bold Red Dining Room Interior Design

Above is a staged shot by Keely’s photographer Martin Beebee of the two finished pillows on the arm chairs in front of the new custom window treatments. Keely had so much fun working with all of the beautiful antique heirlooms that Gina owns such as the two oriental vases flanking the window.
The Right Fabric is Essential for Any Successful Design

The above photo shows the fabric and trim laid out on Keely’s cutting table before she began creating the custom patterns and cutting the fabric for Gina’s window treatments.

Here is a close up of the coordinating valance that hangs in the adjacent hallway. To highlight the intricate hand embroidery, Keely designed a tailored style valance with box pleat corners that hangs on a few well-positioned fluted drapery rings. Keely ordered the valance’s rod from Design Elements in color Imperial Bronze with Gold & Gray.
A Pretty Valance in a Butler’s Pantry

Next to the dining room is the cutest butler’s pantry. Keely designed the space to to flow with the dining room but not to match. Here you can see more of Gina’s beautiful antique blue and white china plates and vases. Even the wall tiles are antiques and give such richness to this special little space that new tiles never could. Keely made the butler’s pantry valance from Scalamandre 16211-001 Chinoise Exotique. It has the prefect amount of whimsy and Asian-inspired feel that is needed for Gina’s style.
The café curtains above are made from Calico’s Dupioni/Cream silk and the red trim used on both is Phantom/Cherry. This rod is similar to the rod in the dining room, but is made of metal and is from Design Elements’ Valencia Collection.
Custom Window Treatments and Hardware Create a Harmonious Flow Across Multiple Spaces

Moving into Gina’s living room, the walls are 12-feet tall and Keely designed drapes that went from floor to ceiling which makes a grand statement in the space. The drapery fabric (Rhapsody/Linen) from Calico has a subtle texture that you get from beautiful linen and blended in with the wall color. Keely made the roman shades from Calico’s Split Rock/Linen. The functional roman shades open and close for privacy and light control. Keely wanted the drapes to cover the wall space available all the way into the corner, so she mounted the drapery rod touching the corner wall and extended it out over the center of the window. This Design Element’s rod is the same as the dining room, but with the royal finial to cap of the end.
Every Interior Design Detail Matters

Above is the pretty valance Keely fabricated. It is in a hallway nook leading into a bedroom. Gina and Keely chose a tailored style with curves at the bottom to show off the beautiful print. The colors in the print and red banding go well with Gina’s style and collection of antiques. It is a joy to take a small area and add just the right fabric to make it special. Gina and Keely both love these designer details and Gina was so pleased with the finished design.
