French Country Style in El Dorado Hills, CA, with French General Fabric Collection

Owner and designer of Right at Home Interiors in El Dorado Hills, California, Keely Hersh, gave her client, Ellen, a fun take on a French country style for her home. Here’s how the design project came together.

Before the French Country Redesign

In the before image above you can see the kitchen nook with a large glass sliding door and the pool under construction in the back yard. The original sliding glass door was bare and left the room feeling cold.

After: French Country Window Treatments

Above, you can see the beautiful glass sliding door as it is after the custom window treatments Keely designed. Keely added warmth, height, and drama to the room with the drapery fabrics and design. The French country design is carried throughout the space with the bistro dining table and chairs.

The Right Drapery Fabric Makes All the Difference

The drapery panels are a gorgeous wide stripe silk called Elegant/Sky. Keely banded the edge with a yellow check (Cap cod/Lemon) to coordinate with the valance fabrics. The main floral print of the valance is French general’s Couluer/La Mer. It is paired with a ticking stripe at the bottom edge in Kind Kelly/Pool from Robert Allen. The same yellow check as is found on the drapery banding is at the top of the valance and on the buttons sewn on the valance’s pleats. These fine details really bring the French country style to life.

Before the French Country Style Family Room Redesign

Above is the before photo of Ellen’s family room. The large grouping of windows and the sliding door needed the warmth of the French country style.

After: Custom Pillows, Drapes, and Valance

In the wide shot of the family room above you can see one of two large groupings of windows and a door. This door leads to an atrium courtyard and the other to the back yard. Keely framed them both with drapery swagging over the end windows for a soft look. She used the same valance design as the kitchen nook going across the windows. The sofa has a mix and match combination of pillows, which is expected with this country style.

It was fun to go floor-to-ceiling with this drapery and to play up the 12-foot ceiling in Ellen’s room. The soft neutral wall color accents the window treatments and allows them to be the real star.

Black Hardware Adds Contrast to the French Country Style

The creative hardware detail is shown in the photo above. The hardware are round rod iron hooks Keely purchased for Ellen for only $5 each, which shows that fantastic pieces don’t have to be expensive to make an impact.

Keely made ties for the drapes with the yellow check fabric and tied the drapes to the hooks. She created the extra-long ties to be in ascending lengths so that the ties did not hang past the draperies swag and into the window.

The soft flip-over flounce at the top added to the overall design and warm look. To hold back the drapery, Keely found the cutest bird tieback in the wrought iron finish to go with the hooks.

A Pretty Valance Helps Create a Flow Throughout Multiple Spaces

Ellen has a small office area just off the kitchen. Keely made a coordinating valance for the window. It has the same style as the other rooms, but with different fabrics. It was a joy for Keely to do this project for Ellen. All these fun details truly make her house a home.
